Honeymoon Budget by Destination: The Real Cost of Seven Nights
In This Article
A seven-night honeymoon in Cancún, a five-night trip to Rome, and a ten-night run through Vietnam all cost about $4,500 for two. Same money. Three different trips.
That is the useful way to read a honeymoon budget by destination: not as one national average, but as a conversion rate between nights and places. Mexico turns $4,500 into a week of all-inclusive. Italy turns the same $4,500 into five nights in a mid-range hotel plus train tickets. Vietnam turns it into a fortnight.
The average US couple spends $4,500–$5,500 on the trip, which lands at roughly 13%–16% of the $34,200 average US wedding (The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study). Your destination choice moves the total less than it moves the shape of the total. That distinction is what most honeymoon planning gets wrong, and it is what this guide fixes.

Honeymoon Budget Calculator →Honeymoon Budget by Destination: Six Tiers, Priced
These are the calculator's 2026 tiers for two travelers over seven nights. Budget means three-star, shoulder season, one paid activity. Luxury means five-star, peak dates, over-water or suite-level rooms.
| Destination | Budget | Moderate | Luxury | Moderate per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caribbean / Mexico | $2,500 | $4,500 | $8,000 | $643 |
| Hawaii | $3,000 | $5,500 | $9,000 | $786 |
| Europe | $3,500 | $6,000 | $12,000 | $857 |
| Southeast Asia | $2,000 | $3,500 | $7,000 | $500 |
| Domestic (US) | $1,500 | $3,000 | $5,000 | $429 |
| Cruise | $2,000 | $4,000 | $7,500 | $571 |
Read the middle column and two things stand out. Europe is 33% more expensive than the Caribbean at the same service level, and the fancier the trip, the wider that gap gets: $12,000 against $8,000 at the top. Southeast Asia is the cheapest place on the board per night and one of the most expensive to reach.
Neither fact is about hotels. It is about how the fixed cost of getting there behaves once you land.
Where the Honeymoon Budget Goes by Destination
The calculator spreads every trip across the same six lines: flights 30%, accommodation 30%, food and drink 20%, activities 12%, ground transport 5%, and 3% for everything else. That split is a fair first frame for a resort week. It is wrong for most destinations, and the error is big enough to change what you book.
Here is how a moderate seven-night trip for two actually breaks down, by destination:
| Destination | Flights | Lodging | Food & drink | Activities | Ground & tips |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caribbean / Mexico (all-inclusive) | 26% | 58% | included | 9% | 7% |
| Hawaii | 27% | 42% | 15% | 6% | 10% |
| Europe | 25% | 32% | 18% | 10% | 15% |
| Southeast Asia | 49% | 20% | 11% | 10% | 10% |
| Domestic (US) | 13% | 43% | 20% | 12% | 12% |
| Cruise | 15% | 68% | included | 6% | 11% |
Airfare ranges from 13% to 49% of the same trip. That spread is the whole story. A honeymoon in Asia is a flight with some nights attached. A honeymoon you drive to is a week of lodging with a tank of gas attached.
Run the $4,500 Riviera Maya week in dollars. Airfare lands near $1,150. The all-inclusive room, meals and drinks included, takes $2,600. Excursions take $400, airport transfers $120, and tips, insurance and the second checked bag absorb the last $230. A flat 30% would have handed flights $1,350 and the room $1,350, which oversells the flight by $200 and undersells the room by $1,250. That gap is a room category.
Use the honeymoon budget calculator for the total, then adjust the line items with the table above. The tool is honest about the sum and generic about the split.
What an Extra Night Actually Adds
The calculator scales the total by trip length, which is correct for lodging and food and wrong for airfare. Flights do not repeat on night eight.
Strip the airfare out of the Riviera Maya week and the remaining $3,350 covers seven nights, which is $479 a night. Add three nights and the bill goes up $1,437, not the $1,928 a straight multiplication predicts. The savings on those three nights is $491, or one more excursion plus dinner.
The math gets more dramatic the farther you fly. Southeast Asia at $3,500 has $1,700 of airfare in it, leaving $257 a night. Five extra nights cost $1,285. The same five nights in Hawaii cost about $2,855. Same calendar time, $1,570 apart.
The rule that falls out of this: when airfare is half the trip, add nights. When airfare is a quarter, add experiences instead. Stretching a Caribbean week to ten nights is cheap. Stretching a Hawaii week to ten nights is a second trip's worth of money for three days.
Flights: The Line You Can't Negotiate
Round-trip airfare per person from a US hub, typical 2026 shoulder-season pricing:
- Cancún or Riviera Maya: $350–$550 from the East Coast and Midwest, $450–$700 from the West Coast.
- Hawaii: $450–$750 from the West Coast, $650–$1,000 from the East.
- Europe: $650–$1,100. Nonstop to London in June clears $1,400.
- Southeast Asia: $900–$1,400, and rarely below $850 even in the deepest off-season.
- Domestic drive-or-fly: $0–$350.
Two levers beat comparison shopping. The day you fly: Tuesday and Wednesday transatlantic departures run $80–$180 under Friday departures on identical routings. The booking window: 90 to 150 days out is reliably cheaper than both 30 days and 300 days, because the deep-discount inventory that opens early gets sold before the 90-day mark.
Honeymoon perks exist but nobody advertises them. Mention the wedding when you book the airline ticket and again at hotel check-in with the license in hand. Upgrades and a bottle of something are common, never guaranteed, and cost nothing to ask for.
All-Inclusive Math by Destination
All-inclusive is not a pricing philosophy. It is a bet about local food costs, and it pays off in exactly one region.
In Mexico and the Caribbean, an all-inclusive room for two runs $2,400–$3,400 for a week and covers every meal and drink on property. A comparable non-all-inclusive resort at $220 a night plus $150 a day of meals and drinks comes to $2,590 for the week. Roughly the same money, except the all-inclusive version has no daily variance and no decision fatigue on day five.
In Europe and Southeast Asia the bet loses. Two people eat well in Lisbon for $60 a day and in Bangkok for $35. A hotel breakfast alone costs $28 a head, and package pricing in those markets is built for tour operators, not for couples who want to walk to dinner. Book the room, eat outside.
Cruises are the most complete bundle on the board and the easiest place to overspend inside one. The fare covers cabin and meals. It does not cover auto-billed gratuities of $16–$20 per person per day, drinks at $12–$16 a cocktail, wifi at $15–$25 a day, or shore excursions at $60–$120 a person. A seven-night cruise quoted at $4,000 for two lands near $5,100 once you add about $250 of gratuities, a $700 drinks package, and two excursions at $90 each.
Whatever the destination, carry the trip total into the wedding budget calculator and compare it against the cost estimator so the honeymoon is not the line that quietly disappears from the plan.
Reverse-Engineering a Honeymoon Budget by Destination
Most couples pick a destination and then find out what it costs. Do it the other way. Set the number, then read down the list.
| Target for two, 7 nights | What it buys |
|---|---|
| $3,000 | Domestic US at the moderate tier, or Hawaii at the budget tier, or a Caribbean budget week plus $500 of excursions |
| $4,500 | Caribbean or Mexico, moderate, all-inclusive. The default answer, and the reason the national average sits here |
| $6,000 | Europe, moderate, seven nights in one city with a day trip. Or a Caribbean week stretched to ten nights |
| $9,000 | Hawaii at the luxury tier, or Europe moderate extended to ten nights at roughly $7,900 |
| $12,000 | Europe at the luxury tier, or two full weeks in Southeast Asia at the moderate tier |
Two of those rows carry a warning. Europe at $6,000 assumes one base city. Two cities means $350 of trains and a lost half-day of the trip, and three cities means you paid for a vacation you spent in transit. Hawaii at $9,000 assumes you are not also paying for a rental car at $65–$95 a day plus $35 a day of resort parking, which is $700 over the week and does not appear in most quotes.
If the wedding is still being funded, the wedding savings calculator will tell you what the trip costs per month between now and departure. A $5,500 honeymoon in ten months is $550 a month, which is a real line in a household budget and worth seeing before you book rather than after.
Six Charges That Miss the Budget
Every one of these is legal, disclosed somewhere, and absent from the number you compared.
- Resort fees. $25–$65 a night at most Hawaii properties and many Caribbean brands, charged at checkout rather than quoted in the rate. Seven nights is $175–$455.
- Airport transfers. Shared shuttle $20–$40 per person each way, private car $80–$150 each way. Some packages include them. Get it in writing, because "transfers included" in a package description has meant airport-hotel only more than once.
- Service charges at all-inclusive resorts. Gratuities are frequently billed separately at $10–$25 per person per night, with housekeeping expecting $3–$5 a day and bartenders a dollar or two a round.
- Travel insurance. 4%–8% of trip cost, so $180–$360 on a $4,500 trip. Cancel-for-any-reason coverage adds 40%–50% on top of that.
- Passports and departure taxes. A first adult US passport book is about $160. Several destinations collect a departure tax of $25–$60 per person at the airport, in cash, on the way home.
- The second bag. $35–$70 each way on most US carriers. Two people checking two bags round trip runs $140–$280, which is a nicer hotel room for a night.
Together these run about 5% of the trip total. On a $4,500 honeymoon that is $225. It is not a contingency fund. It is a known bill you have not been shown yet, and the full honeymoon cost breakdown covers what else lands in that gap.
Pick the Destination That Fits
Five situations, five answers. No hedging.
- $3,000, seven nights, no passport: a US beach town or mountain cabin you can drive to. Flying eats a fifth of the budget for a trip that is mostly about being somewhere quiet.
- $4,500 and you want zero decisions after landing: all-inclusive Caribbean or Mexico. Nothing to plan, nothing to price, no daily arithmetic.
- $6,000 and you want to move: Europe, seven nights, one city plus one day trip. Add a second city only if you are willing to give up a day.
- $3,500 and you have two weeks: Southeast Asia. The flight hurts and the nights do not, which makes it the best value per day on the board.
- $5,500 and you want water: Hawaii at the budget tier with one splurge dinner, and a rental car only for the two days you actually leave the resort.
The number worth writing down: budget $4,800 for a seven-night trip for two. That is the $4,500 average plus a $300 buffer for the resort fee, the transfer, and the bag. Then let the destination decide what $4,800 becomes. It is a comfortable all-inclusive week, five nights in Italy, or eleven nights in Vietnam. The buffer is what keeps the last two days from being about money.
